Reports and photos from summer.

Hey anglers!
It's been a great season in camp again this summer! Everyone is getting their personal bests and some real monsters have been caught! 48", 49", 2 at 50", and a board-leading 50.5er"  (the video of that fish can be seen here.  Language NSFW. Sorry..Bruce got caught up in the moment)

A couple recent reports that came in include:

Terry Walker with partner Randy Smith week of July 22-29.
2 fish of 50"s .A 49" and a 47" and too numerous to count 44"-46" fish. Total trophies 41" and greater.....77!!
------------------------
John Mich, Charlie Buhler and his son Will Buhler. This was Will's high school graduation trip. I've fished many years with these two in the states and in Ontario for musky, but this was Will's trip of his lifetime...and at 17, consider him ruined now!
Of course like always weather plays a big factor in trips like this and this was no different. Some crap weather at the beginning of our week surely did it's damnest to throw a wrench in our plans, but through some luck, grit and perseverance we eeked out a memorable week.
Normally I'd be spouting all the big fish this big fish that crap, but I will only state that Will broke his personal best with pike and walleye multiple times. That his father Charlie caught the most beautiful 45" Silver Pike I've ever seen and I was there in the back of the boat taking it all in, enjoying the father/son experience I so miss on a day like today. My old man would have dug a week like this like I did!
So here are some of the numbers you all crave. We caught 485 pike to 45"s. We caught close to 300 walleye with most being 23+" and topping out at 28". Sure our 41" numbers didn't represent a normal Taltson trip, 27 fish north of that mark is still better than 99% of some whole camps put out in a week and this was just our numbers.
All in all a pretty special trip with good people and good friends. And on Father's Day....a day we all can sit back and remember our special father/child moments..it can't get any more special.

--------------------------
Hey man, the trip went well for the most part. The weather was abnormally hot, as Don told us that last week was the warmest he's ever seen in camp. Regardless, we caught fish and definitely put a hurtin on them for a couple days when the weather cooperated. My biggest pike was 46" and I missed one on topwater across from seal island that was easily pushing 50." Hit a Lake X Fat Bastard as soon as it hit the water and came flying out of the water....biggest pike I've ever seen and he crushed the back propeller blade. Ended up with 15 fish over 41" for the week and got a 27" 8.5 lb. walleye on the last night by Tower Island. I'll send you my brother and dads numbers once I get back to the States. I do know that all three of us got our biggest pike this past week at Taltson, so that was cool....Dad got a 45.5" and Zack managed a 46" also. Some freaking huge fish in that area, man.....saw some in the water that followed 35-40 inch pike and scared the shit out of us boatside. Biggest fish for the entire group that was in camp was a 48" taken on a white Twinkee bait at night trolling, and Bruce got a 49" wth my Dad on a Savage Gear suicide duck right where I missed mine on topwater.

We just got a report in 8/14:
Menzer boat with Brian and Derek,277 Pike, 65 Trophies. Biggest fish among those in camp not named Bruce was Derek's "48". Bruce had a 49 on a Savage Gear suicide duck. Those damn Pike there will eat anything.
The Herbert boat didn't keep a count of fish but were pulling in fish at the same clip as the Menzer boat with Doc Herbert's 47 the biggest in their boat. Park Herbert worked for his fish all week as he was Fishing with a 9wt Fly Rod about 90% of the time. Park brought in many trophy Pike with a 46 incher on his fourth cast out on the first day Saturday morning. The group of Steve, Jesse, and Zach caught many fish with a 46 incher being their biggest. They also caught numerous nice Walleye out front of tower island trolling small crankbaits. Best baits in camp were Grinders, bulldogs, Williams Wobbler spoons, Doctor spoons, Dreamcatcher #8 blade bucktails, Shadzilla's, and Twinkee's.
Winds were 25mph out of the NW on Saturday afternoon thru Sunday night which kept the fish count down as it was tough to fish in the whitecapping waters. The heat set in later in the week which made afternoon fishing a little slower than mornings and evenings. Was a great trip once again.

_______________________ I head up next week with Bill. This time we have rookie Pat coming with. A full report will follow when I get out of camp next saturday!

The Greg Them August 2015 report!

This was my second trip to Taltson. I was joined in camp by Mike, Andy and Dave Jamison as well as Caleb and Josh Little. Everyone had a great time and the fishing was world class just like my last trip. Don, Karen and Helena did a great job with the cooking and Garet did a great job guiding us. The lake is about 2 feet down and there was a north wind each day. The best fishing was off of the rocks. My numbers were the following:

4 days of fishing
333 fish
25 41” or bigger (largest was 45”)
91 between 36 and 40.9”

Everyone in the group caught trophies. I know the largest in camp was a 48” and two 47” fish.

I think only two trophies came from weeds for me. Rocks and trolling were the ticket. The last night of trolling was phenomenal. We went 22 for 36 with 8 trophies, the largest being 44”. There were multiple times while hand landing the fish that we saw one or two trophies that had followed the fish in.

The hot lures for me were:

Spinnerbaits
Black and Gold
Pink
Firetiger

Uboats (Bulldawg type lures) in Pearl, Black/Red Tail
Obaits (Bulldawg type lures) in Black/Orange tail (both years this color has out produced any other colors)
8” Xtreme Glide Bait – It was really cool seeing this bait get destroyed in the span of 1 hour.  A lot of 38-40 fish with two trophies mixed in. It’s really cool to catch them on something I made!
8” Xtreme Crank

Other notes:

Saw the northern lights
It was weird seeing the sun setting on one side and the giant full moon behind us
I have some good camera footage once I get everything mashed together.

If there’s a better place to fish for trophy pike, I would love to be there. Until then, I will continue to visit Taltson. Heading back next year for sure!
